2006 Kevin Rodgers

Kevin Rodgers was born into a family steeped in the true GAA tradition and along with his 4 brothers always wore the famous ‘Green’ jersey with such great pride and passion.
Having watched two of his older brothers collect senior championship medals, he was determined to do the same and finally succeeded in capturing his own senior championship medal in 1958 when playing along with the youth from the previous years successful minor winning team they beat the holders and favourites Clonduff 0-8 to 0-4 in the final at Newcastle and so further enhanced the collection of medals in this proud family household.
When his playing days were over he answered the club call once again and with his elder brother now elected as club chairman, he himself joined the club committee in the early 1970’s and was involved at that time with crucial stages of club development, with the opening of the first GAA Social Club in Down and the realization of the new St.Malachy’s Park.
In keeping with his proud family tradition his own 5 sons have all represented the ‘Town’ over the years with distinction at various levels in both football and hurling and it was a very proud moment for the family when one of these sons captured an All-Ireland schools medal on that famous hallowed turf of Croke Park.
Many of his previous team mates and mentors have all described him as a big strong honest performer, not a player to mess with and forever fearless in the tackle but always in the best interest of the ‘Town’ team. Can it also be said that he and his good wife have been very loyal supporters to all club functions down through the years
A quiet unassuming gentleman who has remained a staunch GAA and ‘Town’ man, who hails from that famous GAA family in ‘Bunkers Hill’ is the worthy 28th recipient of the ‘Johnny O’Neill’ Castlewellan G.A.C. prestigious Hall of Fame Award.
